During the war, the home front was different from how it normally was. All factories were changed to start building equipment and ammunition. This meant that more people were needed on the job so many people were employed. When the war ended, these factories were closed down and many people lost their wartime jobs.
To keep the economy going, the government allowed companies to produce items that the market demanded, and some companies got government funding to re-purpose their products. The government also sponsored major construction projects to employ Canadians. The veterans coming home were treated a lot better than those of World War I. The government provided rehabilitation programs for the wounded, veterans were offered free tuition for college and university, and received technical and business training when needed. Also, the veterans received loans when waiting to start a business or build a farm. However, with the men returning home, the women that had taken jobs in the factories were now asked to leave and go back to the traditional women careers. This caused a financial issue for women without a husband. |
